While I appreciate the surprising post. I would argue that companies could definitely benefit from using Twitter for marketing and PR. Understanding and listening to what people care about is so important and Twitter gives companies a unique opportunity to listen to what the masses have to say versus what the media thinks to be the case. This is a rare opportunity where you can be an active listener and observer. In this regard, I guess it is using Twitter less as a PR tool (which I do believe can happen through various channels i.e. @MicroPR (micro pitching) @skydiver (HARO media opps) #journchat (PR and media discuss various subjects). I, for one, alert my clients whenever someone is talking about their product or service so that they can understand what is being said and how to respond. Maybe this is not exactly what you had in mind but I definitely have some strong opinions on the subject. I think I may just have to do a post myself in response ๐Ÿ˜‰

I always learn a great deal from your posts both on this blog and on Twitter. I hope to continue the discussion

c'mon, you are a fantastic example of how to use twitter well for PR and marketing – you straddle the line very well between being informative and promotional, we all get tremendous value from your tweets (and i mean that sincerely), and it's a pleasure to follow you (i mean that sincerely too) – you just don't call it “PR and marketing”. But whatever it's called, keep it up!
love and hugs (and i mean that sincerely too). Tobias ๐Ÿ™‚

The post was meant with snark. Of course people, and myself included, use twitter for some marketing and PR.

But if you are searching around for tips on how to do it, I would question your ability to listen to the community and rational for being there.

I love the idea of that site being #1 in searches for the topic.
