2 Simple Email Tips

Thomas Hawk, who I have followed for a while on flickr and zoomr wrote a lengthy post on how he hates email. I have taken 2 steps (using gmail, that gets rid of almost all spam) that have helped my love for the electronicness.

1. Go back a day in the life of your email. Set filters to destroy all your bacn. If sender is from American Airlines Promotions = skip inbox and trash. Do this every once in a while.
2. Star what you need to reply to. Filter your inbox to your starred items, and work on your email from there.

Those simple tweaks have really helped me. Any other amazing tips?

When all else fails…declare bankruptcy. I tried it once and it was scary and liberating at the same time. I just assume they will get back to me if it’s really important.

email bankruptcy – choosing to delete, archive, or ignore a very large number of email messages without ever reading them, replying to each with a unique response, or otherwise acting individually on them

Managing a large number gmail filters is unwieldy; I’ve begun to click on the “unsubscribe” links at the bottom of bacn. I don’t wholly trust marketing departments to part with my address, but if it reduces the volume of noise, its worth a shot.
