Snowboarding at Copper Mountain and Vail

This last weekend I headed up to Summit County, a place that I avoid like the plague during the winter because of the horrific traffic I have been in.

This weekend?  Near perfect.

Saturday was a 8″ powder day at Copper Mountain, which is my favorite place to board.  I had a few runs that were as ideal as I could picture.  Light snow for the spring. Dave Amirault and I spent the day in search of powder stashes, which sometimes were thigh deep.  Dave is a really fun guy to spend the day with, knows the mountain enough to be dangerous but will take random turns to keep it interesting.

We spent the night in a dreamy cabin up in Leadville.  I want a mountain cabin, badly.  This was amazing.  The $10 prime rib dinner at Quincy’s was an absolute treat.  If you live in Colorado, you must make this happen.

Vail on Sunday was a treat, Joel from Colorado Powder Forcast joined us for the afternoon. If you are interested in snow, his blog is a MUST.

Vail is rough on snowboarders, with miles and miles of cat tracks. I took a wrong turn and did almost 7 miles to get to Blue Sky Country. I was about to call it a day when I found a fantastic almost four mile long tree run on Orient Express. It was like a racetrack in gently cut up powder. In the shade, the snow wasn’t getting baked and in the run was a challenge. I took laps on it for the rest of the day, going a solid five hours before grabbing lunch at Two Elk.

One happy guy after a much needed weekend. My legs are recovering, but feel super strong. One happy Hyde.

Was at Copper a few weeks ago in borderline blizzard conditions, but it was still a lot of fun. Can only imagine what its like with fresh powder.

Gigantor, it was an absolute pleasure spending time with you, Sally and Joel this weekend. I'll dig up the helmet cam footage of you shredding around in almost a foot of fresh spring snow at Copper and post it to the interwebs for all to see.
